I have not had much contact with professionals other than architects, so I was a bit insecure taking part in the discussion about design with others who are top representatives in their fields. However, I felt at ease after listening to various cases and opinions based on practice. Naturally, different tasks and objectives inevitably result in choosing different processes. But what reassured me was the “necessity” aimed by all. As I mentioned during the discussion, it is necessary to strive by all means for what I call “proper” design. What I mean by “proper” design is design with “necessity”. As in Mr. Hara’s “manhole” example, design with a “surprise” effect without “necessity” might get short attention but will never take root in culture. On the other hand, I admire design that is personal. In that sense, I also appreciate design that is thoroughly “surprising”, although I just denied it. For I do believe that harboring dream and fantasy is one of the positive aspects of design even though it might not change the world. This is my very personal opinion, and I became very aware of it through the discussions. I do not have the ability to overlook the world of design and to point out or suggest “direction” or “dreams”. All what I can do as an individual is to approach each design task with sincerity.
