Lighting design is a profession designing a phenomenon through light, creating a certain atmosphere or a sense of air. The successful interaction and subtle balance of light with surrounding objects and architecture is the essence of lighting design. I feel that lighting design is a bit different from other design disciplines. For example, it is possible to create interesting design without extravagant costs. Of course, it is not possible to create light without light fixtures, so it is not true that it is free of costs. However, budget is just a very minor consideration, and I would like to continue to prove my standpoint in the future. On the other hand, the problem of the “design differences between the provinces and the cities” concerns me greatly, for lighting design is the fruit of collaboration between architecture, construction and landscape design, and therefore poses a serious problem. However, viewing this problem from the standpoint of how lighting design affects our daily lives in Japan, the situation turns around. Wherever we live, we live with light everyday: sunlight at day and artificial light at night. Asking the question “ in what kind of light do you spend your time everyday before going to sleep?” does not result in the differences between cities and provinces, but results in personal differences of value in the lives of individuals. In another words, one can enjoy lighting design in one’s own environment regardless of where one lives. Finally, there is a precept that lighting designers should be “missionaries of light”. I would like to have high aspirations extending beyond being solely a lighting technician and to be able to deal with pressing problems of the society. After our discussion I felt my responsibilities as a designer stronger than ever.
